At the City Council meeting on Tuesday, June 4, 2019, the City Council discussed the latest findings of the Broadband Advisory Task Force (BATF). Established in 2015, the BATF was tasked with studying whether it was feasible for the City of Davis to establish a City-owned fiber optic network. In 2018, they produced their major findings, contained in the Broadband Feasibility Study report, which concluded that the costs to the City would be over $100 million. And the "key finding from our analysis is that it doesn’t look feasible to build and operate a fiber network and business in the city that would be 100% funded by a single bond issue." In the June 4 Council meeting, the City received the Broadband Taskforce Final Report and a recommendation to further study a phased approach to implementation which had not been considered previously by the BATF. The City Council decided to move ahead with further study.
